What is Yakshagana:

Yakshagana is a musical dance drama where a story composed in the form of poems is sung by a singer accompanied by musicians and enacted by dancers. The dancers enact and elaborate the story through dance and dialogues. Scenes are unveiled through different methods by a mixture of musical narration, acting, dance, dance-dialogue (ವಾಚಿಕಾಭಿನಯ) and extempore dialogue (actor created dialogue). All things are presented through traditional abstractions (ಸ೦ಜ್ಞೆ): war, weapons, magic and events. Yakshagana or literally song of celestials creates a completely unreal world through all these and glittering costumes. Yakshagana is not merely a drama it is an event where, sometimes, audience become part of performance. Characters may interact with the audience making whole theatre an extension of stage.
